Description
In the realm of globalization the scope of action of nation states is narrowing considerably. Therefore, from a cosmopolitan perspective it is of increasing importance to assign genuine duties of justice to transnational institutions. Consequently, the goal of the research project is to clarify such duties of justice in regards to the multinational corporation as one of the most powerful institutions of our time. This task will be approached in three constitutive steps. First, the research project aims at formulating an ethically sound account of rights-based cosmopolitan justice which will serve as the normative basis for reinterpreting the multinational corporation. The second step will shed light on the corporation's duties arising from this normative ground. Special emphasis will be laid on (the cosmopolitan reinterpretation of) second and third generation human rights in this regard. The third step finally aims at embedding the "just multinational corporation" in an all-embracing global political framework. Based on the corporation's duties of justice, it strives for suggesting pragmatic amendments of existing political "human rights and business"-related instruments such as the UN Global Compact. Also, it will clarify its place within a political philosophical vision of a truly cosmopolitan world order. The successful completion of the research project will result in the first cosmopolitan theory of a just multinational corporation in literature.
