    Vorwerk SE & Co. KG (or simply “Vorwerk”) has been able to sustain its success in the digital world in recent years due primarily to its Thermomix food processor and associated recipe platform, Cookidoo. Vorwerk is privately owned, with a turnover of €3.2 billion in 2023, of which revenue generated by sales of the Thermomix multifunctional food processor and Cookidoo recipe platform contributed some €1.7 billion. Vorwerk has achieved a sustainable digital transformation through the innovative use of information and communications technologies in its products and internal business processes. As a result, Vorwerk has become one of the leading lights in strategic management and digital transformation. On 10 September 2024, Patrick Naef of Acent AG and Walter and Barbara Brenner, both of the Institute of Information Systems and Digital Business at the University of St. Gallen, conducted the following interview with Marcel Keller, former member of the board of Vorwerk, to better understand how businesses are leveraging information and communications technologies. The discussion encompassed innovative product development, Vorwerk’s business model, the integration of process IT and product IT , and the evolving role of the CIO. The transcript has been lightly edited for clarity.

    Systemic Thinking in IT Management of the Future: Where are the Benefits?
    (Springer Nature (Switzerland), 2025-07) ;
    Ralf Schneider
    ;
    The digitalization of the economy and society continues unabated. Generative artificial intelligence, especially ChatGPT, has triggered a new wave of digitalization since its availability in November 2022. In addition to new technologies such as generative AI, companies and their IT function are still busy with the transformation of applications and IT infrastructure into the cloud, the expansion of capabilities in data analytics, the agilization of application development, new regulatory requirements, the increase in IT security and the shortage of skilled workers. Furthermore, many companies are developing new digital business models that place new demands on the IT function. Social developments, such as sustainability and diversity, are also leading to new challenges for the IT function. The pace of change in companies is also accelerating. The complexity that IT management must deal with has grown in recent years and continues to grow at a rapid pace. Traditional ITmanagement models and IT operating models, such as ITIL or COBIT, are not able to cope with these challenges. Against this backdrop, this contribution discusses whether and how systems thinking can be an integral part of future IT management models and IT operating models and can help deal with the increased complexity brought about by digitalization.
