While bibliometric indicators remain prevalent, they capture only a fraction of the value Information Systems research generates for organizations, policy, and society. This panel report documents the outcomes of a structured workshop held at the ERCIS Annual Workshop 2025 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, in which 55 Information Systems scholars from across the globe collectively reflected on the nature, mechanisms, and future directions of research impact. Drawing on a World Café format with three thematic breakout sessions – covering past experiences of impact generation, current process practices, and forward-looking aspirations – the workshop surfaced rich, practitioner-grounded insights. Synthesizing these insights, we develop a research impact framework that maps six core impact themes – problem relevance & societal value, stakeholder engagement & co-creation, credible actionability, adaptiveness & learning, ethics & risk awareness, and sustainability & longevity – against the four phases of Benbya et al. (2026) impact framework: planning, delivering, measuring, and communicating. The matrix serves as a practical self-assessment tool for Information Systems researchers seeking to design more impactful research. Item type:Publication, Guardrails for Human-AI Ecologies: Norm-Based Coordination and Design for Predictability(2025-12); ;Berente, NicholasSeidel, StefanHuman-AI ecologies involve human and artificial intelligence (AI) based agents that coordinate their interactions in part by following social norms. Social norms, therefore, are important for establishing the guardrails that ensure desirable interactions in a way that is consistent with essential values, such as human safety. Managing human-AI ecologies, therefore, requires specifying norms to enable coordination in known situations, but also allowing for the emergence of norms to enable coordination in unspecified, unstructured situations. We integrate predictive processing theory and social norm theory to explain how existing norms are enacted and reinforced based on agents’ predictive models and how new norms emerge as agents update their predictive models in response to prediction errors in uncertain coordination scenarios. In this review, we aim to revisit various discourses and arguments to advance the understanding of organizational unlearning in management and organization studies. Using an integrative literature review approach with systematic elements, we examine the existing body of research on organizational unlearning. We review the literature from different perspectives, focusing on a process-based understanding in terms of why and how organizations intentionally discard knowledge. Based on our review, we develop an integrative framework that portrays organizational unlearning as a dynamically unfolding process over time. Socio-technical processes involve coherent series of changes over time, entailing actions and events that include humans and digital technologies. The ubiquitous availability of digital trace data, combined with advanced data analytics capabilities, offer new and unprecedented opportunities to study such processes through multiple data sources. Process science is concerned with describing, explaining, and intervening in socio-technical change. Item type:Publication, We are all pattern makers! How a flat ontology connects organizational routines and grand challenges(2024-01-01) ;Kathrin Sele ;Christian A. Mahringer ;Anja Danner-schröder; Birgit RenzlAdopting a flat ontology, we discuss how phenomena of societal concern are connected to organizational routines. We conceptualize grand challenges as large patterns of actions to overcome the micro-macro divide prevalent in existing research. We introduce spatial, temporal, and agentic relations as three interrelated aspects of scale that are of particular interest and demonstrate how social phenomena may be approached through these relations. Focusing on the situated enactment of routines allows us to identify weakening and strengthening between actors and their actions as important processes that reflect the continuous patterning of grand challenges. We contribute to the literature by highlighting the consequentiality of mundane actions and by questioning the dominant approach to change in research on grand challenges. Item type:Publication, Idea generation in exploitative and explorative business process redesign techniques(2024-07) ;Steven Groß; ;Jan MendlingJennifer HaaseBusiness process redesign has received considerable attention in research and practice. An important task contributing to redesign is idea generation. It has been argued that the choice of technique influences redesign outcomes, but empirical evidence is largely missing. In this paper, we examine the role of idea generation in business process redesign by comparing two different kinds of techniques: exploitative and explorative redesign techniques. Often, exploitative techniques are expected to yield more appropriate solutions, while explorative techniques are associated with more creative outcomes. To investigate such propositions, we consider the Best Practices of Process Redesign as an example of an exploitative redesign technique and the Business Process Design Space as an explorative redesign technique. We conducted a free-simulation experiment to study the empirical impact of the choice of redesign techniques on outcomes. We find that the Business Process Design Space leads to a higher number of redesign ideas, which are also more diverse. These are more creative and novel than ideas produced by the Best Practices of Process Redesign. Against expectation, the best practices as an exploitative approach do not produce more appropriate nor impactful ideas in our task design. Since both approaches cover different areas of improvement, a key implication of our work is that they should not be seen as isolated approaches to redesign; rather, they should be purposefully combined to not only create novel but also operational business process redesigns.Type:journal articleJournal:Information Systems and e-Business ManagementScopus© Citations 9 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Generating impactful situated explanations through digital trace data(2024-03-01); ;Waldemar Kremser ;Jan Mendling ;Jan ReckerJan Vom BrockeProgressively, information systems (IS) researchers draw on digital trace data to capture the emergent dynamics of today’s digitalized world. Digital trace data enable researchers to generate highly context-specific insights into the features and dynamics of socio-technical phenomena. We suggest how IS researchers can use digital trace data to develop situated explanations, that is, explanations that capture the idiosyncratic features of real-world problems in order to generate impactful solutions to these problems. We outline five key principles to build situated explanations based on digital trace data.
