PublicationThe Blind Men and the Elephant: Dynamics in Strategy Research(Proceedings of 36th annual Strategic Management Society Conference, 2016-09-17)This paper examines how strategy scholars have conceptualized the term “dynamics”. An increasing number of studies in the field of strategic management address dynamic issues. This leads to the question of what actually is understood by “dynamics”. Based on an extensive literature review, we identify four conceptualizations of dynamics which differ in their level of conceptual richness. Most of the existing studies treat dynamics in a descriptive manner; only a few studies make use of more comprehensive and sophisticated perspectives of dynamics. We provide recommendations for future work aimed at advancing the research on dynamics in strategic management.Type: conference paper

Based on our extensive literature review, we identify four conceptualizations of dynamics which differ especially in their level of conceptual richness, i.e., most of the existing studies treat dynamics in a descriptive manner; only a few studies make use of more comprehensive and sophisticated perspectives of dynamics. By presenting examples of studies with low and high conceptual richness we intend to sensitize researchers for this issue and hope to strengthen debates around “dynamics” with the ultimate goal to detail our understanding about dynamics in strategic management. PublicationBoom and Bust Dynamics of Management Tool ImplementationThis article aims to promote a dynamic perspective on the issues of sustainable managenemt tool innovation. In particular, we concentrate on tool implementation and subsequent rejection, a pattern which often occurs in businesses. Until now, most research on management tools has mainly relied on survey data and has failed to account for the dynamics of implementation and subsequent rejection of a management tool. Since sustainable implementation is not guaranteed by initial adoption, we try to understand rejection (or discontiuation) of tools in order to obtain insights about measure to achieve long-term acceptance. On the basis of a revelatory case study, we present the process of management tool implementation by means of a systems model. We provide a theory about the underlying dynamics of the boom and bust phenomenon.

While research on strategy tools mainly used surveys for a long time, practice and process perspectives of strategy enriched the discussions about the actual use and value of strategy tools. However, the process of implementation and subsequent rejection of a successful strategy tool cannot be explained by existing research. On the basis of a revelatory case study, we present the process of strategy tool implementation by means of a systems model. We provide an initial dynamic hypothesis that explains the underlying dynamics of the boom and bust phenomenon.Type: conference paper

PublicationDifferent Concepts of Dynamics in Strategy ResearchThe objective of this paper is to elicit what strategy scholars understand by the term "dynamics". An increasing number of studies in the field of strategic management address dynamic issues. This bears the question about the utilized conceptual understanding of dynamics. Based on our analysis, we can differentiate four conceptual understandings which differ espe-cially in the level of their conceptual richness. Most studies picture dynamics in a descriptive way. Only a few studies perceive dynamic issues as comprehensive as system dynamics re-searchers are used to, this includes feedback perspectives, nonlinearities and accumulations. With this study, we call for more research in strategic management that uses a conceptually rich understanding of dynamic phenomena. In addition, we provide recommendations for future work aimed at advancing the state of dynamic research in strategic management contexts.Type: conference paper
