Abstract
This chapter explores the concept of informality, defined as the unwritten rules, open secrets, and hidden practices used to navigate social and regulatory systems. Drawing on empirical research conducted in the 2010s in select European countries, this essay examines how informality fosters creativity by allowing firms to adapt to restrictive environments while risking corruption. The analysis highlights the dual nature of informality, in which it can both support innovation and perpetuate unethical practices. This study invites global practitioners to understand the contextual nuances of informality in order to balance pragmatism with ethical responsibility and ensure sustainable business operations.
