Abstract
In the context of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, the question arises, how effectively future business leaders - today's students - are prepared to master the challenges of implementing Sustainable Development (SD). Looking into the current state of Business Education for Sustainable Development (BESD), one finds a field in its early stage of emergence: even renowned business schools are still offering low to no BESD courses. And where practised, it seems restricted to the specialist's niches such as courses in business ethics and environmental management, leaving the majority of business students without any specific qualification for SD.
To reveal and overcome those shortcomings as well as to identify best practise, ranking schemes are considered to be effective means. This paper looks into the evaluation of BESD, starting from general university rankings and characterising existing BESD evaluation initiatives. Concluding that an important dimension of evaluation is yet missing, the complementary idea of a student based evaluation is put forward.
