Abstract
This study contributes to the patterning debate in the routine dynamics literature by examining the emergent nature of pattern emergence and its relation to multiplicity. Building on a longitudinal study in the pluralistic setting of an emergency care unit, we illustrate the emergence of a pattern up to its first performance and show the limits of understanding-based patterning mechanisms in contexts in which the multiplicity is such that no shared understandings emerge. Taking the relational lens of actor-network theory, we observe and theorize that the emergence of patterns of action may be conceived of as driven by the ongoing enrollments and disenrollments of heterogeneous actors and subsequent transformations of the espoused pattern over time, as generated by different mechanisms of negotiation and reframing, depending on the degree of multiplicity among actors. Our findings advance current understandings by exposing the emergent nature of the patterning process and by proposing underlying generative mechanisms of patterning which build on multiplicity.
