Abstract
While vibrant research on educational myths (e.g., de Bruyckere et al., 2020) and sustainability education (e.g., Jones et al., 2010) exists in general, the field and phenomenon of myths in and about sustainability education (MYTHSE) remain untapped. Accordingly, this preregistered scoping review (PRISMA-ScR; Peters et al., 2021), aimed to map the existing research. Data was sourced from Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and PsycINFO via search terms (app. 1) and eligibility criteria. Publications were screened in COVIDENCE. Data analysis entailed descriptive statistics, and content analysis for thematic assessment of relevant articles. Preliminary findings highlight gaps in literature directly addressing MYTHSE, with most studies focusing on general educational and psychological misconceptions. Few publications touch on adjacent concepts of sustainability and environmental education. This review, the first of its kind, points to research gaps and the necessity of a research agenda to further understand and demystify MYTHSE.
