Abstract
This chapter aims to sketch the origins and development of liberal ideas in early modern, modern, and contemporary Chinese intellectual history. The first part traces proto-liberal ideas during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. In this era, no term existed in Chinese for “liberalism”; the modern expression for this concept, ziyou zhuyi, would only appear around 1900 in the vocabulary of Chinese intellectuals studying in Japan.
