Abstract
Decreasing competitive advantages in technology and the corresponding diminishing product margins make it increasingly difficult for product-oriented companies to create financial benefits with products. Therefore, these companies put their focus on the development of product-related services which offer higher margins than products. Many of these companies fail as they develop product-related services without knowing important factors influencing the innovation process. This article explores and presents different antecedents for the development of this service type. The explanation of antecedents forms a model that serves as guidance for managers in typical product-oriented companies wishing to develop product-relates services successfully.
