Abstract
The exploration of Macau underlines the significance of urban geography in cultural history and international studies. Seen from Rua Praia Grande the cityscape yielded its own vision of global relations, with values based on contemplation and tolerance. I will examine how the greatness of Portugal, the exoticism of China, and the promises of modernity came to be jointly exalted in an unlikely forum. In order to look at the crucial role played by Macau in the history of Europe in Asia, I will draw on photographs and city maps that enhanced the city at the turn of the 20th century. Several boundaries will be crossed as I move between a river estuary, a Portuguese promenade, and the Cantonese low houses that extended behind a row of lofty arcades.
