Abstract
Ultrasound (US) has seen broad and growing usage compared to other user-dependent imaging technologies. However, there is no consensus on how to objectively measure US competency, and residents can only allocate a limited portion of their regular working hours for formal training or to gain practical experience. To improve patient outcomes and quality of medical education, innovative solutions are needed to reliably and continuously measure the progress of US training and provide residents with insightful feedback. Established eye tracking techniques are widely used in research and education to understand and discern visual scanning behavior of individuals, and are adapted into novel gaze-enabled systems that enhance user interactions with visual information. In medical education, studies have shown the benefits of eye tracking methodologies over traditional proficiency-assessment and training practices.
However, there is limited evidence on the use of eye tracking in ultrasound training. In a US training context, we present our preliminary findings from an eye tracking study and discuss if fixation duration and count and time to first fixation, can be reliably used to differentiate visual inspection strategies of expert and novice sonographers.
