Abstract
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into industries and society has transformed the skills and mindsets required for professions. However, there is a significant gap in understanding the best strategies for developing curricula that effectively foster AI literacy and integrate AI competencies into higher education. Additionally, the relationship between AI competencies and students’ professional outlook and career planning remains underexplored. Therefore, this study examines how students’ confidence in using AI (AI empowerment) shapes their future orientation, career aspirations and envisioned future work selves (FWS). Building on the literature on AI empowerment and career development, we analyzed data from 699 undergraduate students from Switzerland and Germany using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). Our findings reveal that AI empowerment positively impacts students’ future orientation and career aspirations, which in turn enhance the salience of their FWS. However, career aspirations did not directly influence FWS salience, suggesting additional mediators or developmental factors. Building on these findings, we provide actionable insights for management education by proposing a roadmap of six measures to bridge the gap between AI empowerment, career aspirations, and FWS salience. By enhancing the understanding of how AI competencies shape students’ professional identities, this research offers a practical roadmap for universities to develop future-ready business leaders equipped for an AI-driven world.
