Abstract
Is there an unconscious emotional barrier against women that perpetuates gender discrimination in boardrooms? This study examines the complexities of gender issues and reveals that men tend to conceal their genuine emotions when confronted with a provocative gender cue during interviews on board composition. In their reactions, we measure facially expressed emotions, providing insights into an individual's true emotional state and compare those to verbalized emotions which allows us to identify such emotional masking, revealing a discrepancy between true emotions and what is expressed verbally. We theorize how gendered socialization drives these effects by applying an appraisal theory perspective and identify change in avoidance behavior by men with more international work experience. Our approach successfully demonstrates the uncomfortable nature of gender inequality and identifies previously unknown mechanisms that contribute to the persistence of invisible barriers towards women.
