Abstract
In this workshop titled "(De)Manufacturing Doubt: Active Inoculation for Faculty on Myths in and About Sustainability Education," we explore how doubt is manufactured around sustainability education, often leading to hesitation or resistance among faculty. Drawing on the techniques used by the "Merchants of Doubt" (Oreskes & Conway, 2011), participants will actively engage in reversing common misbeliefs by playing the role of (evil and insidious) skeptics. This hands-on active inoculation approach enables educators to understand how misinformation spreads and how to counter it effectively. The session concludes with reflections on the exercise and the development of counter-narratives, empowering participants to foster evidence-based sustainability education within their institutions.
