Abstract
We study the role of historic transportation in Urban Economics. We summarize attempts to measure transport speeds before the Industrial Revolution and collect corresponding transport cost parameters from the literature. We summarize results from Urban Economics and History on how historic transport costs have influenced the shape and location of cities until today. We discuss possibilities how future research might use historic transportation measures.
