Abstract
The growth of voice-enabled devices has led to mixed user experiences, often due to
limited conversational abilities causing frustration and perceptions of voice assistants as mechanical
and cold. This paper reveals how different initiation modalities—commands vs. requests—affect the
user experience. We use recent advancements in voice analytics and demonstrate that longer,
syntactically enhanced requests foster more natural interactions relative to syntactically constrained
commands. This naturalness leads to more positive user experiences, task evaluations, more
positive word-of-mouth, and more expansive device usage.
