This research proposal develops an integrative framework of uncertainty based on a review of past literature in high-impact business and management journals. The framework depicts antecedents and outcomes of uncertainty and uncertainty coping, behavioral, cognitive-emotional, decisional and economic outcomes. Key empirical studies around the concept of uncertainty are discussed in the context of the derived framework and major patterns and contradictions identified. We find that uncertainty still lacks a universal conceptualization in business and management studies. The concept is mostly captured taking a macro perspective and measured one-dimensionally. Internal sources of uncertainty still do not enjoy equal status in literature as external ones. Furthermore, culture impacting the willingness to bear uncertainty represents an underdeveloped moderator to perceived uncertainty and uncertainty coping strategies.
