Abstract
The case study explores Haniel, a family-owned group of companies. Founded in 1756, Haniel has re-invented itself time and again, developing from a Duisburg-based commodities trading company to a German industrial enterprise and to a globally operating company. At the end of 2011, Haniel employed about 57,800 people at more than 500 locations in more than 30 countries. The case study highlights how Haniel developed a comprehensive corporate responsibility (CR) strategy on the firm's corporate level that is aligned with the firm's corporate strategy. Specifically, students will learn about (1) the need and motivation to link a firm's corporate strategy and CR strategy; (2) the process of initiating and developing a CR strategy and how it is operationalized at the level of a specific new management tool.

The case study is accompanied by a teaching note. The case study and teaching note are available at: http://www.ecch.com
