Abstract
Public rankings of universities on their contribution to sustainable development are identified as an effective mean to raise awareness and facilitate business education for sustainable development (BESD). In the paper, popular university ranking schemes are analysed, the various criteria categorised and discussed against their applicability for an evaluation of BESD. In a second step, the existing 'Education of Sustainable Development' landscape is scrutinised for existing initiatives aiming at such evaluations. The analysis confirms that rankings could provide an effective leverage for BESD in principal. However, some pitfalls requires attention when designing the method, especially the evaluation process. It is argued that such a BESD ranking scheme should be based on dialogues between all relevant stakeholders.
