Abstract
This essay examines a corpus of Italian horror films set in Venice between the 1960s and 1980s, proposing the critical category of hydro-horror: a subgenre in which the aquatic element, while not central to the narrative, emerges as a source of a pervasive sense of the uncanny through its presence in modern urban environments. The specificity of the Venetian lagoon, with its amphibious nature and history of socio-natural transformations, provides fertile ground for the development of a cinematic imaginary of the monstrous in which water becomes a narrative and visual device that problematizes the boundaries between natural and artificial, revealing usually hidden urban metabolic processes. The essay explores how these films utilize Venice's aquatic materiality to articulate cultural anxieties related to urban modernity, offering a critical perspective on the ontological complexity of an irreducibly hybrid environment.

Der Aufsatz untersucht ein Korpus italienischer Horrorfilme, die zwischen den 1960er und 1980er Jahren in Venedig gedreht wurden, und schlägt die kritische Kategorie des Hydro-Horrors vor: ein Subgenre, in dem das aquatische Element, obwohl nicht im Zentrum der Erzählung, durch seine Präsenz in modernen urbanen Umgebungen als Quelle eines durchdringenden Gefühls des Unheimlichen hervortritt. Die Besonderheit der venezianischen Lagune mit ihrer amphibischen Natur und Geschichte sozio-naturaler Transformationen bietet einen fruchtbaren Boden für die Entwicklung einer filmischen Imagination des Monströsen, in der Wasser zu einem narrativen und visuellen Mittel wird, das die Grenzen zwischen Natürlichem und Künstlichem problematisiert und üblicherweise verborgene urbane Stoffwechselprozesse offenlegt. Der Aufsatz untersucht, wie diese Filme die aquatische Materialität Venedigs nutzen, um kulturelle Ängste im Zusammenhang mit der urbanen Moderne zu artikulieren, und bietet dabei eine kritische Perspektive auf die ontologische Komplexität einer irreduzibel hybriden Umgebung.
