Abstract
This study investigates the antecedents of cross-border mobility of executives on a dataset comprising 2209 executive appointments at 415 non-financial companies in seven European countries during the period 1999 to 2005. The study draws upon the notion of a managerial labour market to explain the internationalization of top management teams (TMT), linking the attractiveness of TMT candidates in internal and external labour markets with their cross-border mobility propensities. Findings suggest that foreign TMT candidates face a complex set of constraints in the TMT appointment process relative to domestic candidates. These constraints inhibit companies' efficient utilization of the international executive labour market. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of our findings and outline limitations and suggestions for future research.
