Organisations collaborate in inter-organisational networks to combine complementary resources, stimulate creativity, and develop innovative solutions that would not be achievable from the perspective of a single organisation. In some cases, these networks are managed by a network orchestrator assuming responsibility for the development of a network. Despite much progress, we lack insight into the dynamic practice of network orchestration, into how actors develop networks in context over time. Importantly, there has been little investigation into the limitations of network orchestration, into how and why this practice may not only enable, but also constrain network development over time. To shed light on the limitations of network orchestration, the study reports findings from a longitudinal single case study conducted in in the Swiss healthcare sector. The findings cast light on a particular limitation of network orchestration, showing how it can become trapped by its own success. With these findings, we aim to improve our understanding of the practice of network orchestration.
