Abstract (De)
Management education (ME) has been a growth market for many years, but business schools as the most visible actors in ME are facing challenges to their hegemony arising from an increasingly volatile and competitive ME environment. The slower, almost tectonic changes to ME that can be traced over years have been upended and in some cases enormously accelerated through the fundamental changes brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. The technological pivot forced by the pandemic has transformed the realities of ME delivery in little more than one year, and business schools the world over have scrambled to adapt. In the coming years, they will face not just the legacy of this widespread and accelerated educational technology adoption, but also other difficulties. The future brings changed global and competitive marketplaces for ME with newly emerging competitors and changed competitive dynamics; evolving accreditation, ranking and credentialing approaches; and changing societal and individual management learner expectations that all combine to pose new challenges and demands. For ME decision makers this poses complex strategic challenges; for management learners, it offers new and changed opportunities to engage in ME in traditional and emerging ways; and for management educators, it requires a fundamental reconsideration of what ME is about, how – and by whom – it can best be designed and delivered, and what skill-set – and mind-set – required of them will look like.
