Abstract
Following recent calls to study the accumulation of dynamic capabilities, we analyze how multibusiness firms develop management innovation capability at the corporate level. Particularly, we develop and test a model wherein deliberate learning, consisting of knowledge articulation and codification, mediates the relationship between management innovation activity and management innovation performance. Further, we suggest that the effectiveness of capability development is contingent upon a firm's environment. Results from a sample of 139 European firms provide evidence for the former, however, only partially support the latter. The case of management innovation contributes to understanding the importance of task-specificity and environmental dynamism for developing dynamic capabilities through deliberate learning.
