Abstract
This white paper If I only knew: Fertility policy and family planning in Switzerland is the result of a cooper-ation between the Competence Center for Diversity, Disability and Inclusion at the University of St.Gallen and Merck Switzerland. Our aims are a) to understand the current barriers to fertility treat-ments and family planning in Switzerland from the perspectives of affected individuals, employers, and Swiss federal government and b) to develop actionable recommendations. As outlined in later sections, next to the current legal situation, we focus mostly on the general attitudes and misconceptions that affect people’s decision-making when it comes to fertility treatment and family planning.
The multi-faceted analytical approach included a thorough literature and policy review, analyses of HSG Benchmarking data and other secondary data bases (e.g. data from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office), and semi-structured interviews with representatives of each of the three stakeholders.
