Abstract
During the recent pandemic, Russia was the first country in the world to introduce a vaccine (Sputnik V). Yet in spite of its accessibility—available by appointment at large hospitals and without an appointment at malls—the willingness to vaccinate was low among the Russian population. What was behind this attitude? Was it a distrust of the state authorities? Or of Russian medicine and science? This chapter deals with these and other relevant questions, focusing on the mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic in Russia and the consequences for Russia and its neighbor, Belarus. The case of Russia and Belarus is placed not only in the global context of world leaders and their harmful influence over doctors and scientists in medical education.
