Abstract
Discussions on the protection of data privacy have been following in the shadow of all major digital innovations of the past twenty years. Consumers’ data privacy concerns are growing globally, and several strict data protection regulations have been passed as a response. Conse-quently, most organisations are confronted with the question of how their data processing activities could be more closely aligned with their customers’ privacy needs. Marketing as function plays a central role in answering this question; both as a driver of problematic data processing and as a potential solution to it. While there have been several marketing studies looking at the psychology and economics of privacy, the field is still missing a lens to unify these disparate research streams. Specifically, a conceptualisation of privacy orientation on an organisational level is needed to drive privacy research from a managerial perspective. This dissertation aims at providing such a basis by answering the following questions:
How can companies use their consumer data privacy protection approaches for strategic differentiation?
Which are the relevant dimensions of organisational privacy orientation and how do they contribute to a company’s marketing performance?
To this end, the relevant research streams at the intersection of marketing and data privacy of the past twenty years are systematically analysed. Across six articles, a customer centric ap-proach is used to define a conceptual framework of organisational privacy orientation. The first four articles explore privacy orientation as a construct and how it is currently understood in the market. The fifth article provides a thorough theoretical basis for the construct and pro-vides first insights into its dimensionality. The last article reports a series of five studies detail-ing the definition, development and validation of a self-assessment scale for organisational privacy orientation. Taken together, the findings explain what organisational privacy orienta-tion entails, how it is achieved and what is consequences are. The self-assessment scale can be used to measure the degree of a firm’s current privacy orientation and to help formulate ac-tionable strategies to increase it. Taken together, this dissertation’s results provide marketing managers with the knowledge to deliver consistent, transparent privacy protection to their customers while still reaping the benefits from processing customer data.

Abstract (De)
