Abstract
Without political support, comprehensive administrative reforms are virtually impossible. Yet, whereas the pros and cons of individual administrative reforms measures have been widely discussed in theory and research, little is known about the political process which determines whether or not such measures are implemented at all. This article aims at throwing light on the underlying stimuli which decide upon individual politicians' proneness to support administrative reform. It does so by exploring socio-structural, socio-psychological, and rational choice factors of Swiss members of parliament (n=395) which have an impact on their opinion on new output control policies. The empirically substantiated results help to analyze the diverse fates of legislative administrative reform efforts in the past and to draw essential conclusions for the design and implementation of future reforms. This way, the article has significant implications for the study of the political rationality of administrative reforms.
