Abstract
Not all refutations succeed in challenging misconceptions or provoking conceptual change – many fall short due to poor structure, weak argumentation, or lack of psychological effectiveness. This text introduces the Refutation Rubrics, a research-informed tool developed by Dr. John Cook and adapted by Dr. Stefan T. Siegel to systematically evaluate and improve the quality of myth refutations in education and science communication. Organized into four categories, Structural Integrity, Sticky Science (SUCCES), Explanation of Fallacies, and Overall Argument Quality, the rubrics provide clear criteria to guide the design, assessment, and teaching of effective refutations. The post explores their theoretical foundations, practical use-cases (from peer-review to AI-supported assessment), and educational value. It advocates for a more professional, reflective approach to mythbusting – treating it as a craft that can and should be improved through solid tools.
