Abstract
The aim of the keynote is to show why the supposedly obscurantist Middle Ages is due the collective and communitarian mode of thought that pervades it morally and normatively superior to the late capitalist Neo-Liberalism. The answer lies in the democratization and solidarity that characterizes collective forms of life, thought and aesthetic practices that the Middle Ages foster in contrast to Neo-Liberalism's individualism, egocentrism, and solipsism. I process as follows: In the first section of my presentation I tackle specific political-theoretical elements of collectivity and communitarianism of the late Middle Ages. In the second section, I discuss the philosophical-theological foundations on which political collectivities and communities in the Middle Ages were based on the work of Marcillius of Padua and Johannes Duns Scotus. Finally, in the third section, I discuss musical/musicological features that demonstrate in the aesthetic field the spread and establishment of collective forms as forms of aesthetic practices during the late medieval period. To this end, I will introduce the concepts of "compositional solidarity" and "performative solidarity".
