Abstract
This panel discusses how global demographic shifts—aging populations in the Global North and rapid youth expansion in the Global South—as well as generational and technological change, are not only transforming international business activity but also fundamentally altering how international business knowledge is produced and who participates in its creation. Although research often addresses demographic changes as they affect firms and labor markets, the panel highlights the underexplored impact of these forces on academic careers, mobility, and expectations within the field of international business and management. The panel brings together diverse scholars to examine how demographic divergence and socio-technological change directly shape the structure, opportunities, and challenges of academia. By focusing on intersecting trends—academic labor markets, mobility, rising research hubs, and changing career norms—the panel critically analyzes how demographic structures impose constraints and create possibilities for scholars in the region. The ultimate argument is that these shifts will decisively influence the field's development.
