Abstract
Moving from product business towards service international companies need to establish worldwide service organizations. Using action research techniques and analyzing selected companies in in-depth case studies we were able to identify different organizational setups for worldwide service structures. The analyzed companies differ in their success when moving on the transition-line from product-oriented business to services. We were able to identify four discrete types of organizational design for service business in foreign countries. Additionally this paper gives guidance for choosing the one or other type by including factors like strategic approach, service-offerings and behavioural tendencies in the different setups.
