Abstract
Visual communication can enhance understanding, recall, attention, and also collaboration by visualizing a group's discourse. The object of inquiry of this work is how teams communicate and collaborate with the help of (evolving) visual artefacts that act as versatile communication catalysts and that make knowledge explicit. Although several authors have described which characteristics should be enhanced to improve visual representations, there is as yet scarce understanding as to the optimal level of these characteristics for specific purposes. In this contribution we propose a framework based on the approach of so-called ‘cognitive dimensions of notations'. We develop this approach further and propose a collaborative dimensions of visualization framework, which allows us to distinguish different traits of visual artefacts with regard to their effects on team communication and collaboration. The seven dimensions are described, and illustrative examples of application to group communication are provided.
