The consequences for the organisation are disastrous, placing the very existence of the business at risk in one fifth of cases. The aim of the thesis is to examine this very problem and to propose possible solutions. The first task was to conduct research into the causes and to consider the constantly recurring problems along with the reasons for them and the players responsible. Fundamental questions included: Why do such projects fail? What dynamics are the cause? Which collaborators are placing the success of the project at risk? What are the options for a solution, i.e. what approach and what form of cooperation would be a better alternative? In order to be able to properly address these lead research questions, both a literature-based (research, analysis) and an empirical approach (expert interviews, focus group workshops) were adopted so that findings from different scientific fields on the topic could be compared with experience from the world of practice and viewed in relation to one another. A design science research (DSR) approach was employed to create an innovative artefact in respect of the outlined problem currently encountered in the world of practice. A procedure model and a solution catalogue were designed with the aim of providing a flexible and adaptable basis for constructive and successful interaction between key project roles – specifically those of project sponsor and/or steering committee (SteCo) and project leader (PL). It was precisely this aspect that proved to be a driver of failure over the course of projects. The prime factors in this respect are a deficient interaction between PL and SteCo, a lack of clarity in the definition of responsibilities, and consequently inadequate decision-making in the case of urgent or acute problems. What is lacking above all in this context is a set of instructions that provide effective procedures with appropriate solution options. These factors are aggravated by additional criteria (e.g. disinformation, time pressure, critical SteCo composition). The combination of procedure model and solution catalogue, which has been proven in theory and experiment, is aimed directly at the responsible actors in order to offer situational instructions for action and a wide range of decision-making bases, which, if necessary, leave room to find your own solution variants.deInformationstechnikDigitale RevolutionDigitalisierungScheiternPlanungsgruppeProjektmanagerEntscheidungsfindungVorgehensmodellErfahrungsaustauschEDIS-5063Vorgehensmodell und Lösungskatalog für das Zusammenspiel zwischen Projektauftraggeber und Projektleitung in grossen Veränderungsprojekten mit hohem IT-Anteildoctoral thesis
