PublicationDeveloping a Maturity Model for Service Systems in Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Enterprises(Elsevier, 2014-11-01)vom Brocke, JanHeavy equipment manufacturing firms are increasingly challenged by the integration of service planning and execution in their established product-centred information systems (IS) environment. Despite a few standardisation efforts, there is no common understanding of service systems in industry goods companies and the corresponding requirements for the appropriation of information systems. We address this need by developing a maturity model. The design of the model is grounded in extant literature, focus group and case study research involving eleven organisations over 1.5 years. The evaluation confirms that the maturity model makes a novel and useful contribution to the design of service systemsType: journal articleJournal: Information & managementVolume: 51Issue: 7

PublicationMobile Work Support for Field Service: A Literature Review and Directions for Future Research(Universität Osnabrück, 2015-03-04)Advances in mobile technology and wearable devices as well as enhanced integration between information systems (IS) allow greater efficiency and new service offerings. Especially for location-dependent field service scenarios, new opportunities for hybrid value creation arise. Until now, leveraging sensor data of products and mobile work support for field service mostly remains a promising, yet unused potential. Also, first successes are scattered around various industries going digital. Thus, this paper explores the current state of research on mobile work support for field service by using the methodology of a systematic literature review (SLR). Based on a keyword search yielding 1899 contributions and 94 papers that were analysed in-depth, our contribution is two-fold: First, we present a comprehensive overview of the current state of research and central issues for mobile work support throughout the entire service lifecycle. Second, we outline directions for future research and relevant challenges in theory and practice.Type: conference paper

PublicationTowards a Functional Reference Model for Service Planning and Execution in the Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Industry( 2014-10-28)
;Lingemann, Stephanie ;Mohammed Hindi, Nitham ;Ghoneim, Ahmad ;Themistocleous, MarinosViscusi, GianluigiHeavy equipment manufacturing (HEM) firms are increasingly challenged by the integration of service planning and execution in their established product-centred information systems (IS) environment. Being confronted with the strategic challenge of reducing operating costs and being forced to meet the ever increasing industrial service demands, these firms have more and more problems to find the appropriate IS solution. Moreover, service functionality needs to be clearly defined and demarcated in the existing enterprise application landscape. Despite a few standardization efforts, there is no common understanding of the IS appropriation for service management in HEM companies and clear functional design. We address this need by developing a functional reference model. The design of the model is grounded in standardization literature, focus group and case study research involving eleven HEM and two software companies. -
PublicationTowards an Application Life-Cycle Approach for Selective Outsourcing(IEEE, 2014-01-06)Selective outsourcing has been proven to be more likely to succeed in archiving efficiency targets. For application services outsourcing (ASO), selecting applications to outsource is critical for successful outsourcing. Thus, the implementation of application portfolio management (APM) is essential, in order to provide the necessary transparency throughout the entire life-cycle of an application. APM enables the classification of applications which guides the outsourcing decision. Furthermore, the application life-cycle perspective allows a differentiated and comprehensive view, which is required for selecting applications for ASO. In combination with common selection criteria identified by prior research, we studied the decision to in- or outsource an application. We evaluated outsourcing decisions in a comparative cross-case study with 37 German and Swiss companies. Our research revealed that the life-cycle perspective allows a differentiated view on outsourcing decisions.Type: conference paper

PublicationSucceeding in Application Services Outsourcing Strategies - A Contingency Perspective(Association for Information Systems, 2014-06-10)
;Avital, Michel ;Leimeister, Jan MarcoSchultze, UlrikePrior research has revealed that succeeding in application services outsourcing (ASO) is more complex than the outsourcing of other information technology (IT) functions. This complexity results from the closeness to business processes and lower degree in the standardisation of ASO. The present research endeavour explored the relationship between specific strategy configurations, the so-called ‘gestalts', and the success in ASO. By deriving a contingency model, we identified the internal factors which moderate the relationship between a particular outsourcing gestalt and its success. We conducted comparative case study research with 20 large German and Swiss enterprises. Basing on the notion of literal and theoretical replication, we identified the salient contingency factors and the forces amongst them. We were able to show that the success of the different gestalts is moderated by distinct sets of contingencies, considering the organisational structure, application portfolio structure and the information systems (IS) capabilities implemented. The results contribute to a more differentiated understanding of outsourcing contingencies and support an anticipatory assessment of outsourcing configurations in ASO.Type: conference paper -
PublicationThe Influence of IT Governance on Service Processes in Multi-Business Manufacturing Enterprises: Performance Impacts from Structures, Processes, and Relational Mechanisms(Association for Information Systems, 2013-05)
;Dreier, StefanieIn the last 30 years, developing industrial services has emerged as a strategic imperative for most manufacturing firms. However, they struggle with the implementation of appropriate IT solutions. Being widely accepted as a strategic concept in the IT domain, IT governance (ITG) ensures effectiveness and efficiency in the usage of IT in multi-business firms. This paper aims to investigate the service performance impact of ITG. Doing so, the study takes the resource-based perspective, and integrates the economic theory of complementarities and the concept of relatedness. The proposed increase in service process performance is grounded in the generation of sustainable competitive advantage. The framework is investigated by using eight exploratory case studies in multi-business manufacturing organizations. The results suggest that ITG is positively related to service process performance through the mediators of IT relatedness and service process relatedness. Furthermore, ITG levers have been identified which might significantly increase service process performance.Type: conference paper -
PublicationDeveloping a Maturity Model for Product-Service Systems in Manufacturing Enterprises( 2013-06-20)The constantly rising fraction of industrial services reveals the structural economic change that is changing the manufacturing industry landscape. Manufacturing firms have more and more problems to find the appropriate information technology (IT) solution for planning and execution as they are confronted with the strategic challenge of reducing operating costs while at the same time meeting ever-increasing industrial service demands. Despite the existence of some standardization efforts dealing with product-related services, there is no common understanding of product-service systems and the corresponding processes and IT systems among manufacturing companies. This paper addresses this need by developing a maturity model capturing the key requirements for the information systems (IS) support of product-service systems based on a multiple case study. Further, we confronted these requirements with scientifically recognized maturity models and standard specifications developed by the German Standards Institute. The development of the maturity model is grounded in the design science research approach and is evaluated by managerial experts.Type: conference paper

PublicationFostering Efficiency in Information Systems Support for Product-Service Systems in the Manufacturing Industry(Association for Information Systems, 2013-08-15)The ongoing shift towards stronger service orientation is leading to a rising number of industrial services offered in the manufacturing industry. In the attempt to fulfill ever-increasing service demands while at the same time reducing operating costs, manufacturing firms search for appropriate information technology (IT) solution for planning and execution. The industry has not yet reached a common understanding of product-service systems and the corresponding processes and IT systems. In order to holistically support such broad design and transformation tasks, we develop a maturity model capturing the key requirements for the information systems (IS) support of product-service systems based on a multiple case study. For a critical reflection on the extant literature, we compared those requirements with scientifically recognized maturity models and standard specifications. Being an integral part of the design science research approach, the model evaluation is organized in accordance with approved evaluation perspectives.Type: conference paper

PublicationIT Governance in Multi-Business Organizations: Performance Impacts and Levers from Processes, Structures, and Relational Mechanisms(IEEE Computer Society, 2013-01-10)IT governance is more than ever recognized as a panacea by IT managers to ensure effective and efficient IT operation in multi-business organizations. The aim of this paper is to analyze the performance impact of IT governance. In order to do so, the study takes the resource-based perspective, and integrates the economic theory of complementarities and the concept of relatedness. The proposed increase in business process performance is grounded in the generation of sustainable competitive advantage. The framework is investigated by using five exploratory case studies in multi-business organizations. The results suggest that IT governance is positively related to business process performance through the mediators of IT relatedness and business process relatedness. Furthermore, IT governance levers have been identified which might significantly increase business process performance.Type: conference paper

PublicationInformation Systems in the Industrial Service Business: Analyzing Unaddressed Requirements in a Multiple Case Study(Curran Associates, Inc., 2013-05-23)The manufacturing industry is subject to structural economic change reflected in the constantly rising fraction of industrial services. Being confronted with the strategic challenge to reduce operating costs while at the same time meeting ever-increasing industrial service demands, manufacturing firms struggle to find the appropriate information technology (IT) solution for planning and execution. Despite the existence of a parsimonious set of standardization efforts addressing product-related services, manufacturing firms have not reached a common understanding of the product-service system and the corresponding business processes and IT systems. This paper addresses this need by exploring key requirements for information systems (IS) support of product-service systems based on a multiple case study approach. For a critical reflection we confronted those requirements with scientific and managerial frameworks which are derived from a structured literature review. We contribute to the theoretical body of knowledge by outlining six highly relevant requirements for the under-researched field of back stage service systems. Based on the explored requirements, managerial practitioners are able to draw a preliminary roadmap that prioritizes their investments according to firm specific needs.Type: conference paper
