PublicationService innovation: why is it so difficult to accomplish? This article discusses the common factors and hindrances of service innovation. Our purpose is to add a managerial perspective on service innovation. Multiple case studies on international firms that create competitive advantage through service innovation leadership are the main tool of theory development. This study answers following two strategic questions: What typical deficiencies exist that prevent firms from using service innovation as a source for competitive advantages?, What are the appropriate recommendations for succeeding with service innovation? The study focuses only on companies in mature markets. The findings are limited to this sector. The paper assists managers in concentrating on the right triggers for succeeding with service innovation. Both scholars and managers still tend to be somewhat vague in suggesting detailed recommendations for service innovation. This study identifies five management deficiencies: failure to protect services, lack of clear organizational anchoring, unsystematic innovation process, inadequate customer involvement, and insufficient elimination of bad service ideas. Additionally, the paper offers recommendations for defining, developing, and launching new services.Type: journal articleJournal: Journal of Business StrategyVolume: 32Issue: 3

PublicationInter-institutional collaboration for new integrative teaching programs(Emerald Group, 2011-10-01)
;Morhart, FelicitasThis paper presents an inter-institutional collaboration project. The project's goal was to develop a new teaching program that fosters pre-university innovation and entrepreneurship education. The purpose of this paper is to derive implications for future inter-institutional collaborations. The development and testing of the new teaching program corresponds to the design science paradigm. The findings illustrate that inter-institutional collaboration can generate completely new approaches that are able to deal with new challenges in education. This research focuses only on one specific inter-institutional collaboration project. The findings are limited to this project. The paper discusses implications for future educational collaboration projects to develop new teaching programs. The paper presents a collaboration project between university, school and industry. It illustrates that new teaching approaches can be successfully realised in collaboration. The paper also reports the applicability of a new, namely transformational, teaching approach.Type: journal articleJournal: On the HorizonVolume: 19Issue: 3Scopus© Citations 2 -
PublicationOvercoming resistance to innovation : An approach for the use of communication tools within the innovation processThe objective of this article is to show the need for a situation-adapted use of specific communication tools within the different phases of the innovation process. Therefore, this research provides an approach on how activities, objectives and resistance change during the innovation process. Eventually, it is shown how a key person can use specific communication tools to foster innovation and overcome internal resistance.Type: journal articleJournal: International Journal of Technology MarketingVolume: 4Issue: 2/3

PublicationFrom roles to skills - key persons in the innovation processThe objective of this paper is to show that key persons can lead innovations to success if their skills match the barriers innovations have to face. The roles Promotors are classified in (e.g., Promotor of Power), do not always reflect either the provided or the necessary skills and therefore cannot be used to measure the appropriate Promotor input in the innovation process. By focusing on skills, we present the Promotor-Cubus, which helps analyse the existing barriers and the skills provided.Type: journal articleJournal: International journal of technology marketing : IJTMktVolume: 4Issue: 2/3

PublicationThree Steps To Successful Technology Management In Hospitals( 2008-07-06)
;Gurtner, SebastianUecke, OliverObjective: The three steps will present a theoretical basis on how to identify relevant technologies, how to evaluate and how to implement them. These considerations are crucial for success in times of rising cost pressure and diversification. Methods: A broad analysis of conventional theories on technology management was supplemented by interviews elaborating the organizational structure and the common practice in hospitals. A technology assessment model was created following the Analytical Hierarchy-Process approach. Furthermore a study on international horizon scanning institutes, their approaches and methods as well as structural organization was conducted. Results: For a successful management of technology in hospitals three steps are important. At first relevant new technologies have to be found through an integrated technological foresight approach which connects the needs of the clinical departments with technologies in development or already in market introduction. As a second step the available technologies have to be assessed regarding the three dimensions medical benefit, economical benefit and organizational impact. Appropriate criterias for these dimensions were found and have to be weighted individually. Therefore an integration of key persons on different levels of hospital structure is essential. To overcome the barriers innovations have to face, a structure of promotors has to be established. These promotors have to provide the necessary skills of power, knowledge and communication. Personnel dynamics as well as structural changes have to be considered. Conclusions: The presented theoretical approach leads to a practical guideline for hospitals on how to establish an integrated technology management and therefore benefit from technological innovation.Type: conference paper -
