Description
The project is one of the first to disaggregate the black box of individual-level antecedents of perceived psychic distance. The comprehensive dataset, which contains respondents from 25 countries, enables us to achieve a detailed and precise empirical understanding of the processes at the individual-level. We are able to analyze what factors influence distance perceptions and how individuals form such a perception. Rather than staying on the surface of the phenomena, our study answers the recent calls for more fine-grained analyses in distance research and sheds light on the underlying process of psychic distance performance (Zaheer, Shoemaker & Nachum, 2012). Therefore, we can contribute to the stream that calls for a stronger justification through micro-foundations in management theory (Felin & Foss, 2009).
The key contribution of this research will be twofold: First, we intend to make an empirical contribution with high managerial relevance by opening the black box and focusing on the acting manager, rather than just investigating aggregated distance, we get a more refined picture of what drives perceived distance, and thus ultimately drives important decisions in foreign markets. Together with the first paper by Håkanson and Ambos (2010) we can produce a holistic overview of psychic distance antecedents from micro to macro level. Second, we intend to make a theoretical contribution to the underlying theory of individual-level psychic distance antecedents by incorporating psychological theories, which can contribute to the understanding of perceived distance formation.
