GENESIS: Enterprise Application Interoperability - Integration for SMEs, Governmental Organizations and Intermediaries in the New European Union
The GENESIS project will develop a prototype system to enable the typical, usually small and medium, East-European enterprise to conduct its Business transactions over Internet, by interconnecting its main transactional software applications and systems with those of collaborating enterprises, banking/social insurance institutions and governmental bodies, with respect to the evolving legal and regulatory status.
A typical business case of GENESIS will include the following: The enterprise will produce business documents through its existing ERP application or via a web browser (if no application is available) in order to submit it to another collaborative enterprise. Through the GENESIS server the document will be stored and forwarded to the final recipient ensuring security and confidentiality of data. The recipient will retrieve the document and automatically incorporate it into its existing application (or web browser in case no application exists).
The project is coordinated by Singular Software SA and implemented by a consortium of 14 partners and a third party from Austria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and the United Kingdom representing more than 200,000 end-user installations of enterprise applications.
The duration of the GENESIS project is 30 months.

To seamlessly integrate applications across company boundaries, all stakeholders have to adhere to common standards. Currently, cross-organizational business relationships are setup based on a plethora of standards that involve different technical representations, semantics, process specifications and also vary with respect to scope and granularity. The resulting business standards dilemma prevents corporations from seamlessly cooperating with each other. State-of-the-art standards tackle parts of this interoperability issue by providing flexible and semantically more precise specifications, but have not yet been widely adopted. The abundance of different standards, but also the frequently divergent interests of stakeholders involved in the development and adoption of standards prevents enterprises from seamlessly interconnecting their applications. In this work, we leverage institutional economics to elaborate on a novel approach to facilitating enterprise interoperability. Not the creation of yet another standard, but the establishment and fostering of a proper institutional framework will significantly reduce the stakeholders' uncertainty in deciding for and adopting a standard and thus drive seamless cross-organizational interoperability. A key outcome of the ATHENA-project, the Enterprise Interoperability Center (EIC) is expected to provide such an institutional framework. Item type:Publication, Service Composition Strategies for Loosely Coupled Information Chains(2007-09-17) ;Schroth, Christoph ;Janner, TillHoyer, VolkerWeb Services have experienced great interest during the last years as they are expected to act as enablers of seamless application-to-application integration both within company boundaries and on a global scale. Especially the automation of cross-organizational, information intensive business processes through the loose composition of standardized services is believed to significantly reduce costs and increase operational agility. In this work, we present three different strategies to supporting Web Service composition across corporate boundaries: A central service orchestration architecture, a hybrid orchestration approach with hub support and finally a fully decentralized orchestration solution without any central control entity. We evaluate and compare the three strategies on the basis of the eight criteria functional scope, monitoring capabilities, fault detection and removal, simultaneousness of process instance execution, scalability, security, seamless interoperability of the coupled applications as well as end-point complexity. As various e-Government initiatives are being realized throughout the world, an imperative need for creating unified governmental data models that will facilitate the seamless exchange of information and the deployment of interoperable systems in Enterprises and Central, Regional and Municipal Government emerges. After attempting to identify relevant research that has been undertaken in the field of data modeling, the present paper analyzes the scope and the objectives of the business information modeling oriented towards governmental data. Based on UBL (Universal Business Language) and CCTS (Core Components Technical Specification), a component-based data modelling methodology enhancing business-to-government interoperability is proposed, creating the basis for a repository of governmental data models. The approach adopted may also serve as guidelines for creating and transitioning between "generic - harmonized" and "specific - contextualized" documents. However, the creation of a system clearly oriented towards promoting interoperability of existing systems and facilitating electronic transactions between partners of diverse nature, like enterprises and governmental bodies, still faces significant drawbacks such as the high technical complexity of the proposed solutions or the need for intervention of third-party systems in the transactions. Such problems can largely be attributed to the adopted architectures - primarily peer to peer and server based - that impose specific preconditions in the design and implementation of the systems. The present work is an attempt to define and justify a hybrid architecture that shares common elements with peer to peer and server based architectures and relies on emerging technologies and standards in order to achieve application to application interconnection and seamless information flow directly among heterogeneous systems. Based on a business model framework this work evaluates factors that have to be considered in business models for EI platform providers. Moreover this work gives a concrete example of how a business model could look like in the concrete case of such a platform which is subject of the EU-funded research project GENESIS. The envisioned system supports collaborative and evolutionary modeling, semi-automatic negotiation and finally execution of business processes and ensures true interoperability through a common semantic repository. Potential business partners are enabled to easily retrieve each other and initiate business relations in an extremely intuitive manner. With the help of the Balanced Scorecard approach, we thoroughly investigate economic benefits SMEs will experience when participating at this system. As a technical foundation for the realization of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOAs), Web Services encapsulate complexity inherent to individual applications and allow for their loose coupling. However, a truly global mesh of such services has not yet become reality due to various reasons. Novel technologies and design principles are currently about to emerge which allow human users to use, customize, combine, interconnect and finally expose Web-based content or functionality as new resources which are often referred to as Mash-ups. In this article, we provide an overview of existing Mash-ups as well as tools and platforms that empower users to build them in a highly efficient and intuitive fashion. Statistical data and case studies are leveraged to examine new ways of resource provision and consumption and also the relevance of upcoming intermediaries. Finally, we investigate remaining research challenges on the path to a truly global SOA.
