Description
In this project, we provide a household perspective on structural transformation with a particular focus on the movement of employment out of agriculture. First, we provide novel stylized facts on household employment choices and structural transformation, building on and further developing a unique large-scale micro dataset we have been creating. Second, we analyze a model of sectoral/location choice and labor supply for single and married households. We use information from our dataset on gender wage gaps and employment rates by gender, marital status, and sector/location to calibrate the model to a large set of countries. This analysis yields insights into 1) the determinants of female labor force participation by sector across countries, and notably on the roles of gender wage gaps, social norms, income effects, and marital status, and 2) the implications of female choices and their determinants for household choices and, in turn, for aggregate agricultural employment and productivity.
