Item type:Publication, North - South? Pitfalls of dividing the world by wordsThe phrase 'North - South divide' - as well as variations such as 'North - South gap' or 'North - South cleavage' - has become well established in public discourse and scholarly writing. The phrase, however, is highly problematic, as it is simplistic and as there is a substantial danger of misapprehending it for 'reality' as such. The indiscriminate usage of the phrase 'North - South divide' overlooks the ways in which words create and shape our understanding of the world, on which we, in turn, base our judgements and decisions. The aim of the present paper is to point out specific ways through which this linguistic distinction - as much as any other - shapes our conception of (social) reality. The paper is in two parts. In the first we will initially draw out some pitfalls that inhere in the notion of a 'North - South divide'qua notion, and then point to other pitfalls that relate to the usage of the expression. Item type:Publication, Oneness and Particularity in Chinese Natural Cosmology: The Notion tianrenheyiThe sensibilities suggested by the notion tianrenheyi have pervaded the Chinese philosophical narrative since, at the earliest, the Spring and Autumn Period, triggering ever novel and enriching interpretations. This paper, far from searching for some ostensible essence of the notion, engages tianrenheyi philosophically from a contemporary perspective. Investigating, inter alia, the kind of unity stipulated by the notion, its moral and spiritual entailments, as well as its relation to transcendence clears the way - now freed from some metaphysical barriers - to a fresh outlook on the interplay of oneness and particularity in Chinese natural cosmology. Item type:Publication, New Confucian Political Philosophy - Tu Wei-ming's Fiduciary CommunityThis paper engages with the thought of the contemporary New Confucian and Harvard scholar Tu Wei-ming. Its particular focus is on what could be termed "New Confucian Political Philosophy." Yet, is it appropriate to speak of a specific political philosophy within Confucianism, or, more specifically, within its 20th century successor New Confucianism? Is it fit to use familiar categories of political philosophy such as liberal-communitarian, individual-society, or democratic-authoritarian in order to scrutinise New Confucianism? Taking questions such as these seriously, this paper starts with some important methodological issues and only then turns to Tu Wei-ming's proposal of a fiduciary community, that is, of a community of trust. Among other issues, the Confucian family, self-cultivation, and the concept of "politics as rectification" are discussed.
