Item type:Publication, Technology selection in supply chain management - Influencing factors and success practices(2020-09); Hofmann, ErikPurpose As emerging technologies and the concept of industry 4.0 are on the rise, available solutions for SCM get more complex and dynamic. Because technology adoption is crucial to stay competitive but resources of companies are limited, the purpose of this paper is to gain insights into successful management of technology selection in SCM. Design/methodology/approach Using an interview-based case study approach, in-depth polar cases of technology selection in various industries were collected. Resting on the collected data, transcript coding to analyze information within and across the cases was used. Drawing on contingency theory, supply chain-specific influencing factors and according management practices were identified. Findings The research reveals eight groups of contingency factors which influence the design of successful technology selection in SCM, e.g. complexity and criticality. Moreover, ten themes of response variables were identified, systemizing the options when designing technology selection. Those themes can be differentiated into selection process and selection organization. Research limitations/implications The paper is limited by its qualitative approach and the number of case studies conducted. Practical implications The results provide implications for practitioners by structuring the problem and solution space of technology selection and giving guidelines on choosing technology selection design adaptively. Original/value This research is among the first to provide in-depth insights in technology selection from a firm’s perspective considering SC specific contingencies. Item type:Publication, Process innovation in supply chains Towards a method for achieving process-technology fitMarket environments of organizations supply chains have become more competitive and dynamic than ever, mainly for two reasons. First, recent disruptions have illustrated supply chains vulnerability and put the public spotlight on efficient and effective supply chain management. Second, customer expectations are ever-increasing, adding to the fierce competition between supply chains. Thus, organizations must constantly innovate their supply chain processes to stay competitive. Organizations have often focused on product innovation to differentiate themselves from their competitors in the past. However, process companies like Amazon or Walmart outdo their competition today, facilitating radical and disruptive innovation in their supply chain processes. Technological possibilities to enable process innovation seem endless in this regard. However, most organizations struggle to keep up with technological possibilities, and also research has failed to provide insights specifically for inter-organizational processes in this regard. Consequently, this research aims to explain how organizations can systematically innovate their supply chain processes by deploying technology purposively. It thereby advocates explicitly for a problem-oriented approach towards process innovation. The thesis handles the topic by examining four different aspects: (1) management of technology pre-adoption, (2) analysis of innovation problems, (3) identification of typical problems and solutions, and (4) integration of the individual findings into an overarching, actionable method. The thesis utilizes socio-technical systems theory, task-technology fit theory, and contingency theory as theoretical lenses to investigate these individual issues. The research comprises four different studies deploying qualitative case studies, design science research, systematic literature analysis, expert interviews, and quantitative clustering. The thesis results contribute to theory and practice by shedding light on the influencing factors and corresponding design of technology preadoption in supply chain processes. Moreover, they allow examining and classifying innovation problems in supply chain processes and reduce the complexity of various technological applications and their de-ployment.
