Item type:Publication, Enterprise Architecture Design as an Engineering Discipline(2009-01-01); ;Kurpjuweit, Stephan ;Saat, JanEnterprise architecture can provide systematic support to organizational change, when requirements of respective stakeholders of business and IT are met. This article focuses on the design of enterprise architecture and proposes a business-to-IT approach that considers lessons from classical engineering disciplines. A framework for engineering driven enterprise architecture design is presented. Since such an approach creates specific requirements for tool support, an appropriate software implementation is presented.Type:journal articleJournal:AIS Transactions on Enterprise SystemsVolume:1Issue:1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Virtual Decoupling for IT/Business Alignment - Conceptual Foundations, Architecture Design and Implementation ExampleIT/business alignment is one of the main topics of information systems research. The main challenge in this respect ist the mutual alignment of business and IT structures. Services, applications, and domains constitute fundamental artifacts and are described for the proposed alignment architecture. Direct equivalents for the elements of the alignment architecture are missing at both business and IT side. They should be of coarser granularity than those artifacts that are linked by them. Existing methods can be integrated into the proposed approach. As an alternative a bottom-up approach is proposed and demonstrated by means of a case study for the building of domains as virtual, aggregated artifacts of the alignment architecture.Type:journal articleJournal:Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE)Volume:1Issue:2 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Virtuelle Entkopplung von fachlichen und IT-Strukturen für das IT/Business Alignment – Grundlagen, Architekturgestaltung und Umsetzung am Beispiel der DomänenbildungIT/business alignment is one of the main topics of information systems research. If IT artifacts and business-related artifacts are coupled point-to-point, however, complex architectures become unmanageable over time. In computer science, concepts like the ANSI/SPARC three-level database architecture propose an architecture layer which decouples external views on data and the implementation view of data. In this paper, a similar approach for IT/business alignment is proposed. The proposed alignment architecture is populated by enterprise services as elementary artifacts. Enterprise services link software components and process activities. They are aggregated into applications and subsequently into domains for planning/design and communication purposes. Most design approaches for the construction of enterprise services, applications and domains are top-down, i. e. stepwise decompose complex artifacts. As an alternative which takes into account coupling semantics, we propose a bottom-up approach which is demonstrated for the identification of domains. Our approach is evaluated using a telecommunications equipment case study.Type:journal articleJournal:WirtschaftsinformatikVolume:51Issue:2Scopus© Citations 27 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, A Contingency Approach to Enterprise Architecture Method Engineering (extended version)(2009-02-01) ;Riege, ChristianEnterprise Architecture (EA) and methods for the design and employment of EA significantly contribute to the transparency, consistency, and eventually to the flexibility of an organization. However, there is hardly any one-size-fits-all EA method that is equally effective for a broad range of transformation projects or in a large number of different contexts. Based on an empirical analysis, this paper identifies three relevant EA contingency factors, three dominating EA application scenarios, as well as the correlations of both as a basis for a situational EA method engineering taking these differences into account.Type:journal articleJournal:Journal Of Enterprise ArchitectureVolume:5Issue:1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Item type:Publication, Classification of Enterprise Architecture Scenarios - An Exploratory AnalysisEnterprise architecture (EA) provides a powerful basis to transform an organization and to continually align the organization to external and internal demands. The process of transformation can effectively and efficiently supported by appropriate EA methods. There is however no one-size-fits-all method which is suitable to support all kinds of transformations in all kinds of organizations. Different project types and different context types require different methods or at least different configurations or adaptations of a method. Based on an exploratory empirical analysis, we classify three different EA scenarios in this article. The identified EA scenarios can provide the basis for situational EA method engineering.Type:journal articleJournal:Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems ArchitecturesVolume:3Issue:1 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Unternehmensarchitektur - Literaturüberblick und Stand der PraxisOrganization and management of enterprise architecture have gained increasing significance in recent years. Enterprise architecture management is based on a consistent, aggregate model of the enterprise in order to support decisions such as the design of business areas and products, corresponding business processes and organizational structures as well as application systems and infrastructure operations. Stakeholders have heterogeneous requirements concerning the views on enterprise architecture. The resulting model itself has to be manageable and has to deliver benefits. This article provides an overview of the state-of-the-art of enterprise architecture / enterprise architecture management in the literature as well as current practices in companies. In addition to a literature overview, current practices are presented based on results of an empirical study.Type:journal articleJournal:WirtschaftsinformatikVolume:50Issue:4Scopus© Citations 107 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Integrating an Enterprise Architecture Using Domain Clustering(2007-10-01); Schoenherr, MartenEnterprise Architecture (EA) in the context of enterprise engineering addresses aspects of developing, improving and integrating organizations. The paper introduces an approach to EA proposing Integration Concepts (IC) to reconcile changing business process requirements and information systems. Being process-driven and supporting integration issues the chosen IC is a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Therefore the contribution aims at developing a methodology to support service engineering by defining architectural domains in an EA. The paper shows the need for methods in the field of domain engineering supporting the design of a SOA. The main contribution of the paper is an algorithm based modelling approach and a methodology to support service domain clustering. The clustering algorithms are using a model considering business processes, information systems and information system interfaces. The algorithm adopts network-centric approaches used in the field of social network analysis to define and/or identify service domain clusters in complex scenarios. The paper summarizes a case study in a globally operating company and closes with a conclusion. The paper is organized by chapters addressing context, objective, approach, case, results and lessons learned.Type:journal articleJournal:Journal Of Enterprise ArchitectureVolume:3Issue:4 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, A Federated Approach to Enterprise Architecture Model MaintenanceEnterprise architecture is gaining acceptance as an approach to manage change and foster IT/business alignmentby (1) propagating strategy and process changes to the software and infrastructure level, by (2) supportingconsistent business transformation enabled by technology innovations, and by (3) decoupling business-oriented andtechnology-oriented architectures. Due to constant change in business as well as in technology, enterprisearchitecture management is a permanent process rather than a one-time effort. To keep enterprise architecturemodels up-to-date, a well-engineered maintenance concept including processes, roles and schedules is needed. Thispaper discusses the shortcomings of existing approaches to enterprise architecture model maintenance, proposes afederated approach, and reports on its implementation at a large financial service provider.Type:journal articleJournal:Enterprise Modelling and Information Systems ArchitecturesVolume:2Issue:2
