Abstract
This chapter deals with academic dishonesty among students at Russian universities. Based on several empirical studies, the author looks at the lack of academic integrity with direct student involvement. The chapter discusses all possible forms, from less innocent ones like shpargalka, or unauthorized materials used by students during tests and exams, through plagiarism, preferential treatment, presents, and informal agreements to more questionable forms like payments in exchange for grades. Several reasons underlying academic dishonesty are named and discussed, such as inadequate secondary school preparation, a regimented university structure, the peculiarities of an academic career, and the financing of universities.
