Abstract
Faced with the scale and speed of AI transformation, there is an urgent need to develop the necessary workforce skills. Thus, human resource development (HRD) faces the challenge of enabling workforce skills development to cope with the digital transformation of business processes and job profiles. However, a clear picture of what ‘digital transformation’ driven by AI means for HRD is still missing. Therefore, in this paper, a literature review aims to sketch out the nature of the AI transformation in HRD and identify major concepts or debates to understand how the AI transformation impacts HRD. In addition, this paper analyses busi-ness cases in workforce development to provide a holistic and evidence-based picture of cur-rent HRD practices that focus on AI transformation. The study concludes that AI technology can enhance HRD practice. However, practitioners must consider the adverse impacts or issues of adopting AI in HRD. Therefore, HRD itself needs to further develop and adapt an augmentation paradigm in which HRD works in a symbiotic interaction with AI technolo-gies.
