Abstract
The basic idea of the conceptual paper is the discussion of the value construct in the business and society field and the presentation of the public value concept as a way of better conceptualizing the value creation of business for society. First, the paper draws on the VBA model by Schwartz and Carroll in which value creation is carved out as a central element in the business and society field. Second, the value notion of the VBA model is critically evaluated as it appears to be relatively vague and narrow. Third, the public value approach is presented as a candidate to fill these gaps. A combined Public Value-Balance-Accountability framework is proposed. Public value fills the value dimension of the framework with actual content and provides a microfoundation. It helps to overcome the separation fallacy. The combined framework contributes both to theory and practice in the business and society field.
