Abstract
The debate around copyright today revolves around conflicts between an agenda of increasing the extent of copyright as much as possible, on the one hand, and, on the other, the opposing agenda of limiting this extent, with a view to both access to knowledge and corporate interests.
The Copyright Law in force in Brazil, however, was passed at the end of the 1990s, a period in which Brazil was re-democratizing, there were global pressures for economic liberalization, and major transformations in the ways of creating, distributing and accessing cultural goods and knowledge, with the internet and digital media, were beginning to take shape.
This book reconstructs the debate surrounding the approval of Law No. 9.610/98, situating it in this historical moment but also going back and beyond it. It is essentially a historical work, but one that contributes to unravelling different issues surrounding copyright policies in Brazil, which have an impact and generate conflicts today.
