Abstract
This paper deals with the paradoxes of phenomenological description that Maurice Merleau-Ponty brought to light in his reading of Husserl. While Husserl’s selfimposed task is to make philosophy a “seeing” science, this operation still rests on the means of language, with all its inherent limitations and its reifying nature. The project of reaching a level preceding language via language seems thus doomed from the onset. In his later ontology, Merleau-Ponty delineates two possible answers to this problem: either the “hesychastic” temptation, i.e. a purely contemplative attitude as the dream of the ultimate silent coincidence with things, or a strategy countering the objectifying tendencies of predicative discourse, that of indirect speech. As the paper suggests, Merleau-Ponty’s much discussed “indirect ontology” can be better understood when one situates it in the tradition of “indirect speech” or oratio indirecta. The preconstructs some of the linguistic, rhetoric and epistemological issues with “indirect speech”, such as discussed by authors such as Tobler, Bakthine, Austin, or Deleuze, and outlines how the move from “direct” to “indirect description” opens up a new ethical horizon, which can be called that of indirect ethics.
