Abstract
The study evaluates the impact of a regional airport on the local economy, the economic structure. It focuses on tangible and intangible catalytic effects, taking into account structure, competence, net-work and image effects, with the purpose to show the relevance of regional airports for regions. The study shows an innovative approach to deep dive and go beyond the normal depth of direct, indirect, induced and tangible catalytic effects. We focused on wider economic effects in a more qualitative but sound and academic way. By this it provides deeper and more specific answers then commonly presented.
The research focuses on the regional airport landscape of Switzerland. The research design combines qualitative and quantitative research with the goal to analyse facts, but also to find non-obvious impacts. For this reason, in-depths interviews were conducted with companies which were somehow mentioned in relation to air transport in the region.
In case of one airport which we deep dived, we can show lots of underlying connections to regions which go further than just number of jobs or revenues. We learnt e.g. that the health, event, construc-tion, etc. industries benefit strongly and the luxury tourism industry, which was more obvious.
