This study of the Qing summer capital and its environment has had two main ambitions. I have wanted to understand better the origins of cultural landscape in China by looking closely at the way two Qing emperors shaped and rendered a particular landscape in a border area. I have hoped to join in the writing of union and disunion in Chinese history by adding a geographer's contribution to the debate on the identity of the last dynasty to reign over China. For that purpose I have thought useful to rely on landscape as a major source of information.
